Many people get nervous when they have to give a speech or presentation. Feeling nervous about speaking in front of other people (regardless of the size of crowd) is regarded as a social anxiety disorder. There is more to it than just shyness or nervous.

A social anxiety disorder is when you are afraid of embarrassing yourself when you are being watched and evaluated by other people. This fear of embarrassment is so overwhelming that people go to great lengths to avoid situations that may trigger it.

When you are in a dangerous situation your body responds by releasing adrenalin into your bloodstream. Blood is drawn away from your stomach (this makes you feel sick) and other non-essential systems such as digestion and immune, and taken to your major muscle groups in preparation to run away or fight. This reaction is also known as “fight or flight” and it is completely natural. Although this reaction kept you safe back when we were cavemen, it is often not required in modern day living.

There are many events and situations that can trigger this reaction (also known as stage fright);

  • Business presentations
  • Job interviews
  • Meetings
  • Wedding speeches
  • Birthdays and anniversaries speeches
  • Social events

The most effective way of dealing with stage fright is to remove the anxiety out of the situation. This is where Hypnotherapy can really help.

Problems and symptoms it can present

Most people who have a fear of public speaking do their best to avoid situations where this reaction may be triggered. This can limit your quality of life as you avoid going to certain places, therefore you do not have full control over your life.

People are often forced into public speaking, such as having to give a speech at a wedding or a business presentation. This can cause a huge amount of pressure and anxiety.

There are lots of problems and systems associated with stage fright, they include;

  • Mouth and throat drying up, not able to talk
  • Your mind going blank
  • Feeling light headed and dizzy
  • Nervous about being heckled
  • Feeling sick and upset stomach
  • Sleepless nights worrying
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • People noticing that you are nervous
  • Excessive sweating
  • Not being able to answer questions
  • The audience not being interested or talking over you

How does hypnotherapy help?

The most common service I am asked for by clients is help in getting more confidence. Because I only deal with real world results, I help clients achieve goals that are tangible and measurable. My first question always is “what would having more confidence allow you to do, that you cannot do at the moment?”

Hypnotherapy works in 4 stages. You first address underlying issues, then change your internal beliefs about yourself, project your life into the future and finally set small achievable goals.

Addressing underlying issues

Before you are able to progress in your life, you need to know where you are and what has caused problems in the past. A lot of people will know what incident/incidents have caused the problems, yet many do not. When you do not know the problems it is likely to be a repressed memory and this can be explored and released in hypnosis. Typically underlying issues stem from your school days when you were forced to speak in front of the class.

Changing internal beliefs

Once you have clearly understood what has caused the problems, you can address what you believe about yourself. A great way to do this is to see yourself in a situation where you have problems and see what emotions come up. Image seeing yourself talking in front of a crowd and see how awkward it is and how you are acting. What sort of person would act that way, what do you think of this person. Once you identify your negative beliefs, they can be neutralised.

Projecting your life into the future

People with stage fright often think very negatively about the event they need to speak at. When you believe the event is going to go badly, you naturally feel anxious and try to avoid the situation. In hypnotherapy we get you to see what your life would be like in the future if you were able to speak and present like you want. This builds a new program for your mind to follow in the situation itself and it helps to remove anxiety.

Setting small achievable goals

A common trait of people with stage fright is that they want to be able to speak in front of a large crowd straight away.  They want to be perfect straight away and without making mistakes. If you had this attitude when learning to drive, then you would never have got anywhere. In hypnotherapy we set small achievable goals, not massive impossible ones. If you want more confidence in speaking to people then a small goal may be to talk to groups of 2-3 people to start with. The more you speak to groups of people, the better you become. When you set small goals they are easy to achieve, also when you achieve a goal it makes you feel successful. Success breeds confidence, and confidence breeds success.
