Insomnia

Insomnia is when your normal sleep pattern is disturbed. It is believed that 1 in 3 people in the UK, suffer from bouts of insomnia. Those who suffer from this know just how awful it is when you can not sleep properly.

Insomnia has three different classifications; transient, short-term and chronic insomnia.

Transient insomnia is usually caused by jet lag, an uncomfortable bed or noise. This is mild

disruption and it typically only lasts for a few nights.

Short-term insomnia is usually caused by stress, bereavement, physical pain or withdrawal from drink or drugs. This typically lasts anywhere up to 3 weeks.

Chronic insomnia is when sleeping issues persist past 3 weeks. The cause of this can be stress, anxiety, depression, chest pain, acid reflux disease and breathing problems.

Transient and short term insomnia is very treatable without medication as it tends to be emotional and psychological reasons and not physiological or medical issues. Chronic insomnia can require medical intervention to be cured. It is always best to try and cure an issue with a drug free natural method that addresses the root cause of the issue, rather than just taking drugs to mask the issue.

One of the most common causes of insomnia is stress and anxiety. When you go to bed you need to relax in order to go to sleep. What typically happens is when you go to bed and you have something on your mind, you will think about it. When you are in bed you do not have the TV and other distractions, only your thoughts.

When you think about a stressful situation then it has a physical effect on the body. For example say you have a presentation to give the next day, when you go to bed you start to think about it and this causes you to worry. Your fight or flight response is now triggered and adrenalin is pumped into the bloodstream. This prepares the body for physical action, when what you should be doing is relaxing.

Lying awake in bed is frustrating. Have you ever looked at the clock and thought “only 5 hours until I need to get up?” This frustration causes more adrenalin to be produced and wakes you up even more, making you even more frustrated. It is a vicious circle, the harder you try to get to sleep, the more frustrated you become. The more frustrated you become, the more adrenalin is released and this makes the body and mind alert.

Problems and symptoms it can present

Insomnia not only causes irregular sleep but it also has an effect when you are awake. Just some of the symptoms and problems related with insomnia are;

  • Difficulty getting to sleep
  • Waking in the night
  • Waking early in the morning and not being able to get back to sleep
  • Not feeling refreshed after sleep
  • Feel irritable and tired
  • Find it difficult to concentrate and focus
  • Difficulty with memory
  • Impaired motor coordination

How does hypnotherapy help?

Hypnosis for insomnia is extremely effective because it works in two ways. It deals with what is causing the stress and anxiety and it also completely relaxes the body.

The reason why adrenalin is released into your bloodstream when you lay awake at night is because you see the upcoming event (or whatever it is) as a threat of some sort. This triggers the body’s natural fight or flight response. The key here is to investigate why the event is perceived as a threat so the anxiety can be removed from the situation. If you do not view the event as threatening, then no adrenalin is released.

The second way in which hypnosis helps is with relaxation. Hypnosis is an extremely relaxing state where are all the stress is removed from the body. The state of hypnosis is much like deep meditation or spiritual prayer. It is incredibly beneficial to the body and mind being in this state of relaxation.

As part of an insomnia treatment with hypnotherapy, I teach my clients self hypnosis. This allows you to enter into a deep state of relaxation at home when you are in bed. Like any skill the more you practice the better you get and the stronger it becomes. Practising self hypnosis helps your body fight stress naturally, so even if you do worry sometimes in bed, you will be able to cope with it.

When you have sleep problems it has huge knock on effect in the other areas of your life. Once you sort your sleep out, other areas of your life will fall into place. Sleep and relaxation is incredibly important and it is better to deal with this in a natural drug free way rather than taking pills all the time. Hypnotherapy is very effective and generates results fast. Hypnotherapy promotes healthy and natural sleep.
