Goal Achievement with Hypnotherapy

Goal setting is a major part of personal development. A goal is something that you set for yourself that you want to achieve. A goal could be to lose 20lbs, to get a promotion, to go travelling, to restore an old car, the list is endless. Goals can also be set for employees, for example to close x amount of sales per day or to produce x amount of product.

Goals are a way to focus and motivate people. There is a lot of psychology behind goal setting and why it works. There is an old saying that goes “you get what you focus on”, with goal setting you are constantly focusing on what you want to achieve.

The vast majority of people either do not have any goals, or have very vague goals but have not put much thought into them or come up with a strategy on how to achieve them. A goal is a plan and it requires the following elements; specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. This is also called a SMART goal and it is very popular in the business world.

When you clearly identify what it is you want to achieve, you then devise a plan. Before starting you need to assess what resources you will need and how long the goal should take to reach. Then a step by step process on how to reach your goal needs to be designed and there needs to be milestones and evidence for when you have achieved it.

An example would be to build a BBQ in your back garden. The resources may be bricks, cement, a grill and also a book on how to design and build BBQs. A time limit should be set, for example one week. Then step by step the task is broken down into a sequential order, for example;
  • Day 1, purchase all the bricks, cement and books.
  • Day 2, read the books and think of a design
  • Day 3, design the BBQ on paper
  • Day 4, dig the garden and lay the foundations
  • Day 5, build the 3 main walls
  • Day 6, build the inner parts on the structure and fit the grill
  • Day 7, put charcoal in and light to test the structure
As you can probably tell I have never built a BBQ and this is just an example. In this example however there is a time scale and a sequential order of tasks. The evidence that you have completed may be using it for a family meal. Achieving goals is extremely rewarding and gives you a sense of confidence and motivation to complete more.

Problems and symptoms it can present

Although goal setting allows you to clarify what it is that you want out of life, it does have some drawbacks.

Constantly goal setting/chasing

Goal setting can be quite addictive. Some people write their goals down 10 times a day and almost become robot like about achieving them. Goals should be there to guide you through life, they should not rule your life.

Being disappointed

Sometimes when you have achieved your goal you are often disappointed because it is not what you expected. A friend of mine set a goal to retire at age 40. He achieved this and moved to the country to enjoy his retirement. Within 2 weeks he had become thoroughly bored and set up another business.

Making goals to big

If you set a goal too big then you are destined to fail. If you have not been running since you were a teenager and you goal is to run the London marathon in a year’s time, then you are very likely to fail. When goals are too big and unreachable you often give up part way through.

Not realising why you want to achieve the goals

Most people set goals without knowing why they want to achieve them. For example if you want to earn £40K a year, why is that? What would that amount of money allow you to do that you cannot do now? You could work many extra hours and earn £40k in a year, but you may sacrifice your social and family life. If you want to earn the extra money to improve your social life and spend more time with your family, then you have problems.

How does hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy is an excellent tool for goal setting. It allows you to really explore what goals it is that you want to set and why. In hypnotherapy you set several small goals that are balanced i.e. work, family, social and health.

In hypnotherapy you identify what stands in way between you and your goals. By identifying the blockages and removing them, achieving your goals becomes easy and natural. Most people give up on goals because they take so much time and effort, this is not sustainable over a prolonged period of time.

By setting several small goals in different areas of your life, it gives you a much more holistic approach. As the blockages are removed in hypnotherapy, you will find achieving your goals in all areas of your life easy and enjoyable. Hypnotherapy is an amazing way to plan and achieve your goals.
