A1) What is hypnotherapy?

Much is misunderstood about hypnosis. Most people’s experience with hypnosis is seeing the stage version on TV or on stage. This is a very different application to a clinical setting where it is used in therapy, hence the name ’hypnotherapy’.

So what actually is hypnosis? Very simply it is the process of lowering the frequency of the electrical activity in the brain which relaxes the analytical part of the mind. In the state of hypnosis you have access to a wide range of memories and emotions that are usually very hard to access consciously.

When you are in the state of hypnosis the analytical part of the mind is relaxed and therefore you become suggestible. Being suggestible simply means you accept suggestions given to you by the hypnotist and then act upon them. Such suggestions could be to stop eating when you are full, that you don’t like smoking or that you actually enjoy flying.

Hypnosis allows you to get to the route of an issue quickly and then resolve it permanently. Hypnosis is excellent for letting go of past events and experiences that are impacting your life in a negative way now, it clears the slate as it were. This allows you to have greater freedom and choice in your life and not let the past dictate your future.

Your conscious mind is only capable of concentrating on about 7 things at a time. This is what you can see, hear, touch, smell and feel, but there are literally millions of other things being tracked by your subconscious. For example you are reading this now, but just think of the temperature of your forehead, the weight of your clothes on your shoulders or how you big toes feel in your shoes. See all this information was being tracked but you were just not consciously aware of it before.

Hypnosis addresses the subconscious mind while other therapies focus on the conscious mind. Imaging your mind as being like a computer, the subconscious part is the like the hard drive and the conscious part is what is currently being displayed on the monitor. What is displayed on the monitor is only a tiny fraction of what is actually going on, if you want to make long lasting changes then you need to change the program and not what is currently on the screen.

Because you can only focus on 7 things consciously at a time, if you repeat something often enough (usually 21 times) then your subconscious takes over and you can do the task without thinking about it. Think of when you learnt to drive, you had lots of things to concentrate on at once am dot was very difficult. As you drove more and more, your subconscious took on a lot of the responsibilities, to the point where driving became ease and natural. Now you can drive without even thinking about it and even do other things at the same time.

When you repeat an action several times and it taken on by the subconscious it is known as pattern behaviour. Unfortunately some of the things that we do are not beneficial for us in many ways, smoking or over eating for example. Once the subconscious has a pattern of behavior, it will remain in place until the pattern is broken or changed, or by using hypnosis to access it and change it.

To give you an example, think of a fear of spiders. When you think of spiders you might clench up, start to panic and even run a way. This is a pattern but it is based on something that happened in the past and no longer serving a useful purpose today. You can change this by either continual exposure or by hypnosis. With continual exposure you have to subject yourself to being near a spider over and over again until you learn it is not dangerous. This takes a long time and is not very pleasant. Hypnosis is a much quicker and effective choice.

The application of hypnosis for personal change is practically unlimited. You can change small things such as learning how to focus more at work through to stopping smoking. Hypnosis is totally safe, natural, and free of side effects.

Hypnosis is extremely relaxing, many people compare it to deep state meditation and yoga. At no point do you lose control and you are actually more aware of your senses then when you are awake. Until you experience hypnosis it is hard to describe what it is like, but let me assure you that it feels incredible and afterwards it leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

A2) Does it really work?

Your mind is like a computer, it runs a set of programs generating certain results. In hypnosis you can alter, change and remove pattern behavior therefore changing the result. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy has proven to be an effective therapy through years of scientific research and is currently being used more widely by the mainstream medical community and dentists.

A4) Am I suitable for hypnotherapy?

Everyone has the potential to enter a deep state of hypnosis, however those on medication should consult their GP before commencing with any sessions. Unfortunately people who suffer from epilepsy are not suitable for hypnosis. Children under the age of 18 require permission from a parent or guardian. If you are in good health and are willing to engage in the process, then you are suitable.
