Treating depression with hypnotherapy

Depression Depression and Hypnotherapyand Hypnotherapy

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people in the UK will suffer from depression at some time in their life. Everyone encounters low periods in their life, but these are typically short and we recover from them without help or medication. Depression is when these low periods are extended and are much deeper than normal. When people experience these long and deep periods of unhappiness, it causes disruption to their life.

Depression has a progression, from feeling blue right through to clinical illness. Most people who
suffer from mild depression do not recognise the symptoms and it goes untreated. By not
recognising or avoiding the early onset of depression by keeping yourself busy, this can make you
even more stressed and exhausted.

There are many causes of depression including the breakup of a relationship, losing a loved one, financial problems, retirement, redundancy, genetics, traumatic experiences and alcohol and drug use.

Getting over depression does not always have to require antidepressants. The role of the most common antidepressants is to increase the serotonin (a happy chemical) in your brain which improves your mood. Antidepressants are sometimes necessary if you have a chemical imbalance and without them you would be depressed regardless of your situations and surroundings. In most people this is not the case and antidepressants may elevate depression in the short term, but they do not address what it causing it.

The problems and symptoms it can present

Depression is different for everyone so you may experience only a few of the symptoms and problems related with it. If you experience any of the below symptoms for more than a few days then I suggest to take action before it progresses.

  • Feeling restless and agitated
  • Loss of appetite and weight
  • Difficulties getting to sleep
  • Feeling suicidal
  • Feeling anxious and nervous
  • Find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning
  • See the future is bleak
  • Feeling that life is unfair
  • Having physical aches and pains without any real cause
  • Having a sense of guilt and/or feeling like a burden to others
  • You feel like life is passing you by
  • You can no longer see the point in living

How does hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy is very effective for dealing with depression and it is 100% drug free. Instead of trying to mask the issue by taking antidepressants, hypnotherapy addresses what is causing the problems head on and then helps you to create a new life.

Hypnotherapy works in 4 stages. You first address underlying issues, then change your internal beliefs about yourself, project your life into the future and finally set small achievable goals.

Addressing underlying issues

Before you are able to progress in your life, you need to know where you are and what has caused problems in the past. A lot of people will know what incident/incidents have caused the problems, yet many do not. When you do not know the problems it is likely to be a repressed memory and this can be explored and released in hypnosis.

Changing internal beliefs

Once you have clearly understood what has caused the problems, you can address what you believe about yourself. We all hold internal beliefs about ourselves and these create a filter in which we view the world. For example if you believe that you are a vulnerable person then you will see the world as a scary and dangerous place. Once we identify your beliefs we can set about neutralising them.

Projecting your life into the future

People suffering from depression often think very negatively about the future. When you believe the future is going to be bleak, you naturally feel depressed and have little motivation to do anything. In hypnotherapy we get you to see what your life would be like in the future if you lived the way you want to.

Consider the difference between these two scenarios;

First scenario: You need to walk 10 miles down a road and you know at the end is glass of water and a slice of bread.

Second scenario: You need to walk 10 miles down the road and you know at the end is a bottle of champagne, a cheque for £10m, a new Ferrari, a hot bath, people that you love etc etc.

How much different would you act in the second scenario? In the first you would hardly see the point and have no motivation. You would probably walk slowly with your head hung low and waste time along the way. However in the second scenario you would be excited, focused and highly motivated. You would walk up mountains, through rivers and tackle anything that came your way.

Setting small achievable goals

In hypnotherapy we set small achievable goals, not massive impossible ones. If you want more confidence in speaking to people you are attracted to then a small goal may be to talk to 5 people at your work and ask them about their weekend. When you set small goals they are easy to achieve, also when you achieve a goal it makes you feel successful. Success breads confidence, and confidence breeds success.

Large goals are only a lot of little goals put together. If you set small daily/weekly goals then you cannot help but achieve large goals!
