There are three main forms of anxiety; post traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and generalised anxiety disorder.

Post traumatic stress disorder is when you experience a traumatic event (or series of events) and it has an impact on your life afterwards. Such events include car accidents through to violent and sexual assault. It is also common for people who have been in hostile conditions such as war, to develop post traumatic stress disorder.

Panic disorder is probably the most common form of anxiety and everyone will experience low levels of it sometime in their life. Panic disorder is when you think about future events and believe they will have a negative outcome. The most common examples that cause panic disorder are taking your driving test, sitting exams, awaiting a court date, public speaking/presentations, job interviews, awaiting medical results and money issues.

Generalised anxiety disorder is also known as free floating anxiety. There may not be a reason for it developing and you can feel anxious everyday about a range of situations and issues, rather than anything specific. When there's no identifiable cause, the person often becomes anxious about feeling anxious all the time, and the problem starts to feed off itself.

The problems and symptoms it can present

Anxiety causes both mental and physical symptoms. Without being treated the symptoms can get worse and become serious issues that limit your quality of life.

Some symptoms and problems related to anxiety are;

Short temper, have difficulty concentrating, think constantly about the worst outcome, sleeping problems, depression, becoming preoccupied/obsessed about something, excessive thirst, stomach upsets, passing wind, loose bowel movement, frequent urinating, sexual problems, heart palpitations, muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, pins and needles, tremors and painful or no periods.

How does hypnotherapy help?

Post traumatic stress can be very much elevated with hypnotherapy. In hypnosis negative and painful emotions can be reduced, therefore lessening the impact they have on your life now. It is very much dependant on what it was you experienced and how it impacts your life now. Hypnotherapy can help you to stop living in the past and focus on what it is you want to achieve now and in the future.

Hypnotherapy is very effective at treating panic disorder. With panic disorder there is usually a specific upcoming event that is causing the anxiety such as an exam. When you believe the outcome is going to be negative it causes anxiety. For example if you have an upcoming exam you think about failing, you may realise how much time and money it will cost you to sit it again and this can lead to panic attacks. In hypnotherapy you clearly identify what is causing the anxiety in the situation and address the issues. The painful emotions and negative beliefs are changed and a positive outcome is used to replace the negative one. This removes stress from the situation and therefore stops all the worrying and allows you to focus and concentrate.

General anxiety disorder it largely caused by the self beliefs you have. For example if you believe that you are fragile and unable to defend yourself then you will see everyone and everything as a threat. In hypnotherapy we address the beliefs that you hold and set about changing them. When you change your beliefs it changes the world that you live in and therefore stops irrational anxiety forming.
